It’s not about the trophy!

This year will go down as one of my all time hunting experiences.  When I look back at what made it so memorable it is not because I harvested a Bull elk with a bow it is because of the accomplishment of a dream of mine that I had set as a goal 12 years ago.

 In this day and age people are still caught up with the notion that bigger is better, size matters, how much do you have, was it a trophy, how much did it weigh and how big was the rack.  I can tell you for me, personally taking my first Bull elk with my bow was the most rewarding hunt having overcome personal challenges (total knee replacement), and spending quality time in the field, sharing it with good friends and family.  All creatures are trophies and when you take a life of an animal there is no score in my book accept a personal satisfaction of matching your skills in the woods with one of god’s finest creatures.  So far, I have had the pleasure of sharing Elk pasta, Elk salami and Elk burgers with many of my friends and when asked was it a trophy I simply say, it was the trophy of a lifetime not because of the rack but because of the experiences shared.

 Hunting is not about the kill and has never been for me.  It is about spending time in the woods and getting back to nature.  After 12 years pursuing my passion of chasing elk with my bow I was able to harvest a beautiful Bull elk that in my book was a trophy and a hunt of a lifetime.

  1. Chris,

    Great story! For us, it is always about the process of the hunt and the excitement of being out in a natural environment, enjoying the hunt and time spent with good friends. The kill is secondary and not always necessary. We are happy just getting some great video of a beautiful creature that we can share with others.

    Congrats on fulfilling your goal and overcoming the set backs in order to land your “Trophy”!

    For me the hunt is a release. Whether I see an animal or not is secondary. I just enjoy being out there, it soothes my soul and relaxes my spirit. I get to block out all the things that happen in my normal work and home life and just enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. Don’t get me wrong I like it when a huge buck comes in and puts on his show as well. There are times though when I do not even think about shotting , I just sit and watch. I think you learn more that way anyway! Great story!

  3. Chris,

    I love your attitude. You are so right. My feeling is this -

    Hunting and fishing is not all about:
    The kill when hunting or the catching when fishing
    The size of the rack or the size of the fish

    Hunting and fishing is about:
    The sounds, the sights, the smells;
    The camaraderie, the challenge, the rewards;
    The relaxation, the escape from the day to day;

    Hunting and fishing are holistic experiences that are void of the true reward if you are only concerned about – the “kill”.

    Nice story and I too like the way you think and truly appreciate the 12 years it took to realize the greatest gift. Hunting and fishing for me is about sustainability and Spirituality. Sustenance for the body, sustenance for the soul.

    Great post.
